Breaking News – Ville de Métis-sur-Mer Confirms Their Intent to Purchase the Lighthouse  (December 4, 2012)

Dear Friend of the Metis Lighthouse,

Very good news on two fronts!  First, we are extremely pleased to report that the Ville de Métis-sur-Mer has taken the definitive step forward in the acquisition of the Pointe-Mitis Lighthouse site from the federal government. At last week’s regular monthly meeting, the council unanimously passed a resolution to accept the federal government’s offer and purchase this historic site for a nominal sum of $1 and receive a $100,000 grant towards its renovation. The offer was in response to the proposal that the Ville operate the site in collaboration with the association and Heritage Lower Saint Lawrence, the regional heritage group that made the original petition for heritage status for the lighthouse in 2010.

Second, our fundraising campaign has now raised over $90,000 (Nov 25th) towards our initial campaign goal of $100,000.  We have been overwhelmed by both the breadth and depth of support: over 125 individual donors, of whom a third gave over $500 each. Thanks to everyone who has given or pledged to give.  The Ville de Métis-sur-Mer is presently receiving donations and will be issuing receipts for the 2012 taxation year for those who make donations prior to December 31.

These two developments are certainly not independent, and this strong show of support sent a clear signal to the council that there is a widespread, passionate and long-term interest in preserving the lighthouse for future generations. Indeed, the explicit goal of this fundraising campaign was to convince the Ville that there was solid community support for this endeavor – both financial and civic. However, years of deferred maintenance have left the lighthouse, outbuildings and infrastructure in poor condition, and substantial investment will be required to refurbish the lighthouse and make the site useable again, especially a proper restoration of the keeper’s house.  We must thus continue our efforts with private donors like you and build on this strong support to seek additional funding from other community members, businesses, foundations as well as regional, provincial and federal governments. Needless to say, your support will be a key element in our ability to obtain matching funds. Our work has really just begun.

So, we are on our way! Numerous legal steps are still required, but the site could be partially functional as early as summer 2013. Keep abreast of news and information on the lighthouse and the preservation project by visiting www.savemetislighthouse.org. Indeed, go there now to check out the contributions of the children at l'école L'Envol to our recent “Why I love the lighthouse” contest.
Best regards,

Barry James, President
